Today is the day; I was so excited I was going to get my dog, my puppy, my Sheltie! We chose Brandy from a breeder southwest of Waukesha in June 2001. Brandy’s Mom was a beautiful show dog and a smaller breed Sheltie. Brandy was the runt of the litter, weighing only 1.5# when we brought her home. Happy and fun like any other puppy, we thought she would grow up fine and be like her Mother.
About one month after bringing Brandy home, I noticed on occasion, she would sit, look sad and become lethargic. She wouldn’t eat or drink water, seemed very uncomfortable, and couldn’t lie in one place for long. This was the beginning of a never-ending health problem with Brandy. I took Brandy to every veterinarian within a 30-mile radius of our house, blood test after blood test, x-rays and exams everything would turn out normal. We were instructed to try changing her food to find the right type that she could digest and not make her sick. Everything we tried, including all prescription foods didn’t help her at all. I searched the Internet for information desperately trying to find help for her. Many of the veterinary clinics I saw didn’t know what was wrong with Brandy and some thought I was exaggerating her condition. During this 4-month time frame, someone suggested a stomach scope. I called Wisconsin Veterinary Referral in Waukesha. Although they could do this procedure, they suggested I check first with Pewaukee Veterinary Service where they too have the medical equipment and doctors who could do this test for me at less cost.

Brandy and I met Dr. Randy Schuett in 2002 where he performed a scope of her stomach and found Helicobacter (a spiral looking type of infection that sticks to the inner stomach wall). Brandy still gets an upset stomach, but with medications and diet, we have been successful in reducing the gastro attacks she gets and can treat attacks quickly when she does get one. I found a natural wholesome dog food that she can eat and digest well. I have learned to read dog food labels and analyze all ingredients. A lot of additives in the dog food were a trial and error with Brandy. I had to keep a journal of what was in all the food we gave her. The above is a brief summary of all Brandy has gone through over the years. Brandy continues to have various health issues that come on with no warning signs at times. We don’t know if this is because of how small Brandy was when she was born, her immune system, or other.

This is our little Brandy. A typical Sheltie, sweet, loyal, shy, and our best friend. Brandy has quirks! She must chase (herd) anything on wheels. She will make me vacuum on Saturday morning by lying in front of the vacuum and crying until I start vacuuming! She loves playing with her ball, rag bone, a sock and chasing and barking at flashlights and shadows. Her favorites are tummy rubs in the morning and cuddling in your lap while watching TV. Oh and how can I forget the snow! Watching Brandy in the first snow is always great! She will chase your feet and bark so you kick up snow for her! Brandy can be stubborn and likes to hide under the kitchen table. She doesn’t like the water, getting her feet wet in puddles, baths, grooming with the brush and the UPS Truck!
She trusts her Doctor Randy, he understands and is good to her. She has gotten to know a couple substitute doctors who have also treated Brandy, Dr. Jeff and Dr. Tom, who have helped Brandy in times of immediate need. Thank you to all the doctors at Pewaukee Vet for their understanding of how strange Brandy’s medical conditions have been for her and her family. For understanding how over- protective I am of Brandy, and just how much we love her. It’s hard to imagine what Brandy’s life would have been like if we were not the ones who chose her out of the litter of puppies that day in 2001. It wasn’t what we expected for us or for our dog, but it is what it is, and we continue to enjoy Brandy and help her as much as we can.
