Pet Of the Month - Bailey

Bailey an American Miniature Eskimo

Bailey was rescued from a restaurant. His previous owner had brought him to restaurants as a very young dog to get the attention of women. He did get my attention and I picked him up. Jim, my husband, asked to buy the dog and paid double the price. It was the first time I had smiled since we lost our German shepherd, Tara, to cancer. That is how Bailey came into our lives 14½ years ago. There have been many smiles and many challenges since.

Bailey had a mind of his own and thought he would decide the way the house should be run. He jumped through windows, grabbed people's food, pulled on my socks and pants and barked his commands at everyone. Because of this behavior, Jim even tried to give him away once. It took time. He improved, but still does it his way..

Bailey who thinks the world should be run his way

Both Jeff and Randy Schuett and the staff at Pewaukee Veterinary Service have really been an important part of Bailey's life. However, at first they did say to Jim "You did not buy Sue one of those American Eskimos?" Now they have grown to like him too, I think. Bailey was really sick at 6 months old and had a tumor blocking his colon. Jeff and Randy saved his life. They have made him a healthy, happy dog through countless problems, such as: Leptospirosis, a tender stomach, broken tooth, gallbladder, bouts with Cushing's Disease, sewed him up after dog fights, and did tests for possible cancer.

These are highlights and quirks of Bailey’s life:
1. Bailey will not eat his food unless the dish is on a carpet.
2. Bailey volunteered at Shorehaven nursing home and visited the Alzheimer's unit where my mother was. Each person was allowed to get in three pats and then he would move on to the next person.
3. Bailey could not be left at home when he was young. One day a week he spent the day at Waukesha High School. There he posed for black and white photographs, where one girl was able to get a scholarship because of the pictures she took of Bailey.
4, Bailey is extremely good at finding pills in anything and can spit them across the room.
5. Bailey is addicted to drinking water.
6. Bailey is known as a "chick magnet." Girls are very attracted to him. Anyone could meet a girl walking Bailey. Even at 14, he is still the "chick magnet."
7. Bailey loves small fluffy female dogs. Other dogs he would prefer to ignore.
8. Bailey will not leave a sick person's side.
9. Bailey loves car or boat rides and swimming in Pewaukee Lake. He does not like to get his head wet.
10. Bailey thinks it is his life's duty to keep the neighborhood free of rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, ducks, turkeys and anything else that moves.
11. Bailey likes to look nice.
12. Bailey likes to chew on sheets, quilts and blankets but never puts a hole in them.
13. Bailey does not like cold weather, even though he is an Eskimo.
14. Bailey hates to have his picture taken and these were difficult to take.

We have enjoyed our 14½ years with a unique dog named Bailey, who still thinks the world should be run his way. We really can thank the Pewaukee Veterinary staff for keeping him happy and alive.
